James,

I think what Preston was referring to is that you have the option selected in photoshop that the printer manages the colors - not photoshop. If this is is what you want, you have to make sure the printer is also set to manage the colors. If I read it correctly, your EPSON printer is set to NOT manage colors "no color management" - so it is expecting PS to do so.

So - Photoshop is expecting the printer to manage the colors, and the printer is expecting photoshop to manage the colors - and in the end neither is doing it. I think this is the problem.

Does that make sense?

Exactly! (Sorry for the delay in getting back to this topic James.)

Thanks. This is new and since I upgraded Photoshop. I guess I will try (sigh) DPReview. I have not been on Naturescapes in years and don't want to have to register a new account.

Did you fix the conflict in your dialog boxes?

Hey Preston,

Yeah - I changed it to Photoshop to try it that way. I am still not happy with the results. I am looking around on forums but am not seeing anything truly helpful. Sigh. We will see what happens. I am heading out with T for the holiday, so we won't be back until Sunday.

I have a question... if you are using your own printer, then why would you want to print your images in the small color space of sRGB? I have an Epson 7800 and when I use it I always use Adobe 1998 RGB color space, set in my printer and my file is of course the same. I don't print from Photosop either. I use a program called Qimage and get really nice results.

Hi Lesley,

I only use my printer when I need a quick print, not for my general use. I don't think that the wear resistance is there to use it for stuff I am selling (unless I clear it with the client when we are in a bit of a rush). Most of my prints off of my old 2200 are for my own usage.

As to why I shoot sRGB? Because most commercial printers use sRGB as their color space (or something close to that). If I were doing all of my own printing in house, I would probably use ProPhoto as the color gamut is the best (I have always been curious why most cameras limit you to only sRGB and Adobe).

My understanding is that most printers use sRGB anyway, so there is really no point in printing in any other color space.

Well there is a reason, Jim. A larger color space will give more colors and detail than the smaller color space. sRGB is used by labs so most people are not even aware of the larger color spaces. I use my printer for fine art prints these days, but when I used them for my agility shots they were hands down better than lab prints... brighter, clearer, more detail than lab prints.

I understand now, James, why you wouldn't use RGB and yes commerical labs use the smaller color gamut. My printer uses pigment inks and are archival as well as the fine art paper I use. There is, though, a huge difference between sRBG and Adobe RGB and ProPhoto color space.

I agree that there is a difference, however, I disagree that most consumer model printers (and even most pro models) are capable of rendering anything outside of the sRGB gamut.

Well, it looks like I stand corrected. I gave up on self-printing so long ago, it appears that I'm behind the times.

I got this from another forum:

Jim,

Yes, Many of the current inkjets and especcially the new ones such as the Epson 7900/4900/etc are capable of beyond sRGB.

A review of the 4900 on Luminous-Landscape:
