Hey Everyone,

Does anyone know of any basic video editing software that I can purchase? I am doing my first video of myself today - which will probably not go far, but I plan on making a semi-serious promo tape later on as a result of this.

Thanks
James

I've been playing with the movie editor in ViewNX2, but that's probably too simple.

LOL, Jim, you have no idea how basic I am starting from. I am feeling like I am being dragged 'kicking and screaming' into video. Having said that, is this program for Nikon only?

It came with a Nikon camera, but I've used it with other video. Super simple.

I'm sure Canon has something similar.

James:

Windows Live Movie Maker is available for free download if you are running Win7 or Windows Vista Service Pack 2.

Movie Maker is pretty basic and quite straightforward, but does provide for limited transitions & animations; as well as adding music, title pages, editing, etc.

Also, iMovie is bundled for free with new iMacs. Otherwise it is available from the iTunes Store for $49.95. It runs on the iPad2. (Can be made to run on older iPad with a hack.)
iMovie looks a little more robust than Windows Movie Maker. Comes with themes and background music.

Adobe Premiere Elements9 is available for either PC or Mac ($54 after rebates from BH Photo) Much more functional, but with an undoubtedly steeper learning curve. Available for trial download at Adobe.

Hey Jim,

That's really helpful - thank you very much. LOL, my first video of myself was a total bust. I am going to start working on something a bit better over the coming weeks.

Just revisiting this old thread. I made my first 'real' video for myself today having met with the folks at the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, NY. It is a rather interesting facility and I have about 20 mins of raw tape and photos that I want to begin stringing together.

We're Mac so the choices are pretty simple and painfully few: Adobe Premier Pro CS5 or Final Cut Pro. Both are fully-featured editing programs which will allow you to do everything you have ever wanted with your video. Which means they take a lot of time to learn how to use effectively. Final Cut Pro is the closest to the Avid programs Linda used to use in her studio work so that's what we are currently using but it's a bear to learn (said the guy who is trying to learn it :))

If you are PC-based, the choices are more numerous and you have some good budget-friendly pieces of software. Be sure you can import your files from the 5D directly without converting them.
