Went to this amazing country in January. I especially loved Etosha and the wildlife shots were taken there. I have also included a shot of a dried lake bed in Sosssuvlei. Any comments or advice gratefully received:-

Good to see you back Wingnut. Some lovely shots in your selection: I especially like the little jackal (because I like jackals) and the sunset. Is the small gazelle a Thomsons? Sweet face.

Thank you Possum. Its a Blacked Backed Jackal. One at Etosha came so close you could hand feed it. We saw lots of them at Cape Cross seal colony. The small antelope is a Steenbok.

Hey Wingnut,

It looks like it was an awesome trip. I had a bit of difficulty going through your site as the photos kept freezing on me when I clicked on them. The only shot that I got to see nice and large was the Rhino shot (which I really like a lot). How close were you? Did you go with a tour group of some sort?

James

Thanks James. The Rhino was right in front of me as I turned around a corner on a track in Etosha. he just stood there glaring at me for about 20 seconds and then ambled off into the bush. I went with a tour company called 'Wild Dog Safaris', based in Windhoek. I was originally going to go self drive but there are certain places you can only get to by travelling with a registered tour company, e.g the west half of Etosha and parts of the Skeleton Coast, so I went for that. Thanks for taking time to parse out the links. Are you up for a few more questions? LOL!

1) Can you talk more about the conditions? Were they on the order of what PeteD described in his Botswana article?

2) Do you mind if I ask about how much a trip like this costs in total?
Also, would you do it again?

Going on safari continues to be on the list of things I want to do when the time is right (add to it, Alaska, Cambodia and Austrailia).

Thanks!
James

Check out this link for Wild Dog safaris. They do some good trips: http://www.wilddog-safaris.com/
I went the wrong time of year really, (January). There was plenty of rainfall in Etosha so the animals were not congregating around the waterholes so much. They were more spread out and harder to find. Namibia is interesting for photography because it has a huge range of contrasting geographical and climatic features. A huge empty coastline, dune deserts, rocky mountainous areas and bushland. Etosha is the main centre for safaris but there are also smaller reserves dotted around. I've previously been to Botswana and Tanzania. Botswana will probably enable you to see more game. It seems more concentrated but the geography is less varied and the lodges are very expensive. I love Tanzania, especially the south which is less 'touristy'. I spent 8 days in the Ruaha national park with this operator:
http://www.tanzaniasafaris.info/index.htm . The Fox family run a good operation in my view. I hope to go back there next year
The cost all in to Namibia (including flights) was £2350, I think that about $4200. Namibia's prices are roughly equivalent with those of the UK. I would go back but I think I'd prefer to spend more time in one place rather than be living out of a suitcase for two weeks travelling around. It does get very tiring.
I'm off work sick at present so have much time on my hands so feel free to ask me any questions here or by email.
Cheers
John Davies
