Hi everybody, looked for a forum to introduce myself, here, but didn't find one. So, I think I'm going to introduce myself with some pics of two of our five dogs, the Bearcoat Shar Peis ŽJ. P. McEnroe and Miss MoneyPenny (clockwise) A.K.A. 'The Magnetics'. by the way, my name is Nicolaus. Hi Nicolaus, and welcome. I love the Bearcoat and thanks for introducing me to this line of Shar Peis. I really like the second shot of your two dogs. Looking forward to more of your posts.

Hi PeggySue, thanks for your comment. Yes, I love the Bearcoats too. Unfortunately, the breed masters (don't know the proper English term) opted for withdrawing the Bearcoat's breed standard, in the early 1980s and so, they have become extremely rare, in Europe. Although the first Shar Pei Champion in the Western World - in the 1970s - was a Bearcoat. And although there were just about 150 Pei worldwide somewhen in the 70s, resulting in an extremely small gene pool. All this doesn't mean that there aren't many Bearcoats born but the majority of the breeders are cruel enough to just kill the Bearcoat puppies as they don't want the public to know that their breed has got the Bearcoat gene. Fotunately, there are some breeders - such as Sandy Shreu in Australia - who breed Bearcoats, nevertheless.

Beautiful!
Is the bear coat a desirable trait in terms of shows? We have a fluffy corgi and although we LOVE the long hair, it's considered a defect. Unfortunately not, Jim. As I explained further up in my reply to PeggySue, the Bearcoats lost their breed standard status in the 1980s. It's a real pity, particularly because of the extremely small gene pool. And of course as they are the most beutiful subspecies of the Pei breed. By the way, my vet also has got Corgis and one of them is fluffy, too.

Don, great dogs and super shots. Those are the first bearcoated Shar Peis I've seen and they are gorgeous. I have similar shots of two of my Rotties -- Sundance and Moxie -- running around the yard with Moxie attached to his cheek! BTW, we have a long-coat Rottie who is out of our stud dog. The long-coat gene is a recessive that is actually in all lines but long coats are considered a disqualifying fault in Conformation. Yet most of the long-coats I've met have great temperaments and excellent structure. Maybe it's time to add a Variety to both breeds . Jim
