I decided to try the self timer on my camera, first time since owning DSLRs for 9 years....

Pretty boy, Lesley. I've never used the self-timer because I can't control where the dog is looking even when I'm in the photo so I have a long-cord shutter release as well as a wireless one. That way, I can bait the dog I'm with and take the photo when the dog's look/expression is right where I want it to be. Here's a sample of one I did with Rowdy for a profile page.

Take care,

Jim

I thought about the cable release, but I have a short cord, not a long cord. Next time if I put his ball where I want him to look that will do the trick. It was a first attempt impromptu moment which was great for learning how to do it better next time. Thanks for the tips.

Roll the ball so he looks out and not just down. You can get very inexpensive wireless shutter releases on eBay.
