Gettysburg is a really an awe inspiring place, isn't it? In addition to the bazillion monuments, the sense of history is amazing. Standing on the spot where Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address, history came alive and filled me with the same sense of amazement as when I visited Independence Hall in Philadelphia. I think the last shot captures that feeling best. Were they doing reenactments while you were there? I was a week late when I visited.
James, it really isn't far from where you live. Just right for what we consider a weekender.

Seemed like there were some pockets periodically doing re-enactments. We were there for four days with an historian who pointed out places I've only read about. He also pointed us to places that I've never heard about like where the first shot was fired and on Little Round Top where Chamberlain set up a line behind a low rock wall which was not part of the wheel that after five attacks the union used to quell the rebels, it was all quite fascinating.
I've been to Independence Hall, it struck me as another hallowed ground, being there was a religious experience.
