About two months ago I started shooting assignments for a magazine and it has kept my quite busy. Now i would like to enter the world of studio photography. I have a general idea of what equipment to get, but I would like some opinions on a set up. I have pretty much decided on ordering The alien bee's. I plan on shooting mostly pet portraits and some people portraits with no more than 2 people at a time. Right now I shoot pet portraits either outside, or inside with bounce flash. I am wondering about things like :
-umbrellas or softboxes and what size?
-what power strobes?
-how many strobes? ( plan is two, but do i need third for backround light )?

I know there are many knowledgable people here and that is why i am asking here. Thank you in advance.

How large is your studio? How high are the ceilings? What color are the walls, ceiling & floor? How many windows and what size are the windows? The answer to these questions will determine how many strobes and how powerful they will be. You say that you also do portraits outside. What do you use for fill light for outdoors now? I would suggest at least one strobe that is the most powerful that you can afford to serve double duty as fill light outdoors and as a main light indoors. I don't care for softboxes as they give the unnatural square highlight in the eye. I prefer octadomes or umbrellas to give a round catchlight. What ever you end up buying, make sure that all your umbrellas, softboxes, octadomes are made by the same manufacturer so that their color cast will match throughout your scene.

Thanks for your reply

-My room is about 19 x 12
-ceiling height is about 8
-1 large window facing north ( plan of covering it up )
-the floor is brown carpet, walls are brown, ceiling is
white

Right now I do my outdoor portraits with flash and diffuser and sometimes reflectors. But yes it would be nice to use strobes outside as well.

I would not cover up a north window! I had a studio with a north window and I used it durring the day. northern window light really is optimal for photogaphy.
