Look like I am late again,, We hit Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons the last 2 weeks of June, and Crater Lake last week,(only 100 miles from home). This year on spring break we traveled the entire Oregon coast. Oregon only has one national park, but lots of state parks. Last August we hit Bryce and Grand Canyon, and no, no diary, I don't need one, I have a mind like a steel trap.. all rusty. DAve

LOL, story of my life. If I don't write, I just DON'T remember everything. We are getting excited as our time in the parks is really just starting in a couple of months. We are preparing for our Yellowstone/Grand Teton trip the last week of September.

Last year, I had wanted to get some hip waders and photograph from the middle of the firehole river. I may start trying to find an affordable pair on e-bay.

Has anyone here ever tried to climb Grand?

James

James,,, just a suggestion,, buy your waders new,, They are rubber and rot, When I took a trip to Alaska, someone gave me a pair, they looked fine,, till I got in the water, leaked like a sieve, packed them all the way there and had to end up buying new anyway.
Where are you talking about when you says Grand,, Grand Canyon, Grand Tetons or Grand Staircase-Escalante? I have climbed none so can't help you. One place that I would love to climb is the hill above Grand Prismatic Spring to get a WA shot of the spring. Have a great trip. DAve

Rubber waders will make you feel cold in the river. I suggest neoprene waders. Remember, knee boots is for ankle deep water, hip waders is for knee deep water and chest waders is for hip deep water. This allows for waves and other unexpected matters that happen in the water.

Hey David,

Thanks for the heads up. So far the best prices on e-bay that I am seeing are about 50 bucks for a pair. Does anyone have any reccommended brands?

James

Cabella's, Hodgeman, Simms are three of the top brands. I use Hodgeman 5mm stockingfoot wader with their lightweight wading boot myself.

I would think if you are just going to use them this one time,, why not get the cheapest you can find? Can't see spending a lot of money if you don't need to on something that is a one time use thing.

I have bought the cheapest before and they leaked the first time out. You haven't lived until you get in the water in Alaska with leaky waders. The water here is cold enough to kill you in 15 minutes. My life is worth more than cheap leaky waders. If I would not use it myself, I will NOT recommend it to a friend.

David,
No need to appoligize. Even if James used the waders only once, he could recover more of his money by selling a decent pair of waders than a cheap pair. This is the time of year to buy waders as the stores are discounting them to clear out the fishing stuff to make way for fall and winter stuff. I use my waders for photography and fishing, so I use them frequently. To me, a decent pair of waders are as vital to photography as a good tripod. A good pair of polypro longjohns under a good pair of neoprene waders and I am all set for photographing waterfowl and shorebirds from the water at their eye level. They don't seem as skittish when photographed that way.
