I am looking for a nice photo destination for vacation around October. I live in Kansas. A full days drive is probably the max. I would like to go east somewhere. Nice and cool, with hotel accomodations for the wife and baby.

Any places come to mind? There has got to be some nice fall foliage around somewhere.

Thanks for any suggestions.
Andrew

Hey Andrew,

Rocky Mt NP sounds like a great idea. I realize that Colorado is actually West of where you are interested in going, but I am not sure what you can do in a one day drive from Kansas. I would say that Tennesee would potentially be a phenominal place to go visit at that time of year...though my guess is that the leaves are turning a bit later than that...and I am not sure if you could actually drive it in a day or so.

Curiously, what do you consider a 1 day drive to be? I think even Rocky Mt. National Park may be a two day drive (depending on where in Kansas you are from).

James

Andrew,
I was thinking the same thing as James: just how far do you feel you can drive in one day? That will pretty much determine where you can go.

I am out in the boonies just north of Wichita.
Probably around 14-15 hours would be the max. I had thought of Colorado as well. My family vacationed there pretty much every year growing up. I just don't know how the altitude will affect the little one. It will only be around 3 months old at the time.

Thanks for the ideas.

Andrew, things will change greatly with the birth of a baby. Depending on how the baby travels, and how your wife is handling being a new mother, you may or may not be able to do a 14-15 hour trip in a day. It will take longer than it would pre baby as you will have to make stops for feedings, changings and crying.

People all handle new babies differently. Having 2 children, I know I personally would not have enjoyed a long car trip at that age. Though, thankfully they do sleep quite a bit.

October is pretty in the Smokies, though I have no idea how far it is from Witchita
