In anciet times, Hawaiians lived under strict laws such as they (as commoners) were not able to touch any of the chiefs possessions, walk in his footsteps or let their footsteps touch royal ground, if they did the penalty was death. Hawaiians would chase the offender down and put him to death unless he could reach the area of "point of refuge" or "city of refuge". Also, defeated warriors and non-combatants could reach the "point of refuge" during battle, one then could be purified and absolved of any wrong doing and thereby return to society.
This area on the Big Island of Hawaii was made a Nat'l Park in 1961 and is 182 acres in size.
