This winter has avalanche forecasters across the province on their toes. They are trying to predict and manage the kind of snow pack that has not been seen since the 1980s. Long periods of cold dry weather, followed by heavy snowfall in early January caused the closure of many highways across the province. These conditions created many challenges for decision makers in Rogers Pass in Glacier National Park. Between December 25 and January 14, 230 cm of snow fell on a snow pack that had been weakened by extended periods of dry cold weather, all of which sat on a deep crust from a November warming period.
