Trees toppled; damage forces some trails to close
A National Park Service trail crewman surveys damage on the Hatcher Mountain Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park recently. Last week’s storms forced the full or partial closure of eight backcountry trails, including the Hatcher Mountain Trail. Officials on Thursday confirmed that an EF4 tornado struck the northwest corner of the park April 27.

The Nature Conservancy has donated its 177-acre Gypsum Dunes Preserve in the famed Texas panhandle to the National Park Service. The preserve, which is part of the second largest dune field in the continental United States and possibly in all of North America, will be incorporated into the Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

Bison 'managers' kill calf (Note - I almost did not publish this one but decided that it was definitely newsworthy)
A wild American buffalo calf born Monday was found dead Thursday - a result of being repeatedly forced from winter range in Hebgen basin by agents with the Montana Department of Livestock and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, say Buffalo Field Campaign (BFC) volunteers who witnessed the death. Yellowstone National Park rangers and Gallatin County Sheriff's office were part of the repeated "hazing" operations that entail forcing buffalo from winter range under the controversial Interagency Bison Management Plan.
