Injured Smoky Mountain bear survives to be a mom
Jay Carr, biological science technician, and Carrie Gilbert, wildlife management intern, hold a tranquilized black bear and her three cubs recently at a den site in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Last Thanksgiving the mother bear was seriously injured after being struck by an automobile in the park. After treating the bear with antibiotics, park officials released her not knowing if she'd survive. Two weeks ago they tracked her radio collar signal to her winter den, where they discovered the injured bear almost fully recovered, and with three healthy cubs. (National Park Service)
