As Tony says, put $40 or $50 into a decent tripod and see how much you use it and what you'd need to make it better.

Over time, as you use it, you'll get into looking at carbon fiber and ball heads, quick release plates, etc. But if you've never used a tripod, start slowly and cheaply. There's no need to invest $300 to $500 or more in something you aren't going to use much.
