I know what you mean about the scale of these birds. It's hard to realize how large they are until you see them in person. This one stands about 3 feet tall. What's truly impressive is their wingspan, which is really hard to get in a captive situation.

BTW: One of last summers wildfires in San Diego burned right up to the outer fence of the animal park and within a hundred yard of the breeding facility shown below. It was definitely a little scary and the facility was seriously threatened.
