Usually Double-crested Cormorants are zooming along just above the water but I was able to catch this one right near me and above with the light just right. I don't think he saw me until the last moment.

Hey Joe,

This is a rather spectacular shot, even with the tiny wing clip. The light was perfect. The thing I find spectacular about the Cormorant is their eyes. It is like looking into a jewel. Very beautiful shot. Great capture.

Joe,

Excellent capture. These guys fly fast which is always a challenge. Care to share shooting data?

Geo

As always thanks for the kind comments.
Details:
Canon 30D with Canon 4.5-5.6L IS 100-400 Zoom.
IS was set to 2 for horizontal panning.
Hand held.
Iso 250 F5.6 1/1000sec 400mm. Aperture preferred.
Taken 11/30/07 at 4:12pm.
It was late afternoon, and I was on a low bridge which crosses a lake. The sun was behind me and to the right and fortunately he flew over to my left probably because some guy was walking his dog on the bridge to my right. He filled the frame, there is little cropping in this pic.I only got off one shot.

One was enough. Thanks for the data.

an excellent capture! perfect light and spot-on exposure... cormorants do fly fairly fast, and if he was that close, he'd have been by you in a hurry!
