We always have mild winters, so any snow is welcomed as play time. Went out to the Columbia Gorge for some time with the colder temps and light dusting of snow as well as put the D300 through its paces.

I wanted to emphasize non ordinary perspectives on very (if not over) photographed spots.

Here is one of Multnomah Falls:

Ok..ok...I could not resist a classic shot of the falls in a more frozen state.

Here is one of Wahkeena Falls...I couldnt get past the arrangment of the trees with the bare one in the center of the other evergreens. The falls are lost a bit in the fog in the background.

The two that read Pano in the title are 4 portrait style shots stiched together.....and print REALLY big (up to 40x60 inches wide)

I have to say...the D300 is absolutly my favorite camera to date.

Roman,

Good to see you posting again. Seems like it's been a while. I assume you have been mastering your new D300 as demonstrated by these beautiful images.

I finally broke down and ordered my D300 this week. I am really looking forward to all the new features.

Geo

BTW: Were these images shot in 14 bit color?

Hey, thanks! Been actually kinda in a lull. Almost demotivated, but getting back in the spirit! :~) Yes...in that time I have been playing with the D300 and getting it dialed in. I shoot in 14bit color on all my shots. Not shooting anything moving...so dont need the speed.

Hey Roman,

Have you shot the same images in 14 bit vs 12 bit? What differences, if any, do you see? On another note, love the photos. It is amazing how the scene changes with the addition of the snow and ice.

Thanks
James

James....I already tested in that diffrence. I have settled on 14bit for my work. You'r not going to see much diffrence to the naked eye, but when you do any kind of DR work or lightening of the shadows or bringing the highlights down a tad (slightly over exposed) as well as any other edits...you naturally have more headroom to work with (less distructive to the files)

Roman,

Yes I know about those lulls. Funny how sometimes life interacts with photography.

I was wondering how you like using Capture NX. I know what a master you are with CS3 and I would be interested in how you've incorporated NX into the work flow. I have to tell you that when I first tried NX last year, I was underwhelmed. But during the summer I made a real effort to start using it more and much to my surprise I now find myself using it almost 90% of the time. I find the control point technology really can substitute for all the selective masking and layering I used to do in CS. If NX had a good clone brush I would probably be using it 99% of the time. I've actually done some HDR comparisons using your overlaying technique vs control points and quite frankly except for some special cases, the control points can really suck more DR out of many of my NEF files.

I'm just hoping they can make some performance and interface improvements in version 2 and not screw it up.

Well...it dosn't somtimes interact with my photography....I find appreciation and love of my world exactly what makes my photography what it is. Without it, my pictures seem kinda lifeless.

Capture NX is now perminantly in my workflow. Nothing gets the colors right like Capture...it just makes a huge diffrence. Oh...Color point technology will be released by NIK (who makes Capture NX) as a windows plugin soon...so keep your eye out!

As for being slow...
1. Make sure you have a MINIMUM of 2gb of ram in your pc.
2. Make sure you have your cache pointed to a seperate hard drive. It reall makes a diffrence when the read write happens on a diffrent disk as this frees up the bus for one way traffic instead of clogging it up with up and down traffic.
That alone should make quite a diffrence.

And yes....I am finding the DR layer masking is unnessassary with NX...it can wrangle in those skys pretty darned nicely.

Active D-lighting is pretty awesome too.

Roman,
What is that bright red I see through the 5th arch from the left on the bridge?

Also, I am blanking: What is DR an abbreviation for?

I will have to look at the large file when I get home, but I think it is a reflector.

DR = Dynamic Range.
