I was FLOORED when I wen to the web site of Explora Lodge. US rates were over $500 a night.....and that was for the lowest price?

And that is per person.

WOW!!! Might spendy.

Nice place....not sure I will ever get to see it.....being the trip costs as well as room and board.

Enjoyed the article though.

Hotel rooms here in NYC are pretty offensively expensive - and they have gotten even more so of late. Lots of people traveling to NY due to the weak dollar. A 3 star hotel here in the City starts at about 300/night - though prices fly much higher than that without much effort.

I start to cringe when it gets above $100.00 for a place that I will just shut my eyes for a few hours before getting back up and going like a mad man. I shoot before dawn....and after dusk.

Could care less about the views of the room I get....because I am out IN that wilderness all day.....so it’s just a bed to me. Just give me a place to put my gear down, kick off my shoes...take a quick shower and fall over dead....LOL!!!

Guess the whole luxury hotel concept is lost on someone like me.

But strange enough.....I don't sleep well in tents and the like either. A cheap hotel or a state run cabin in a park that is clean and reasonable....and close to my destination works just fine. If that would be under $50.00....all the better. :~)

I used to be a big tent user but the bad back makes sleeping on the ground quite an experience the next morning. Now I just pull the back seat out of the van, throw in a mattress and I am good to go. Like Roman, I'm there to shoot and could care less where I close my eyes.

I agree on the low cost room,, have never been able to figure out why some people pay huge sums of money for a room, When I go someplace all I need is comfortable/clean bed, because I spend very little time in the room anyway.I have a camper on my pick up truck so that usually works out good. We stayed in the camper at Farewell Bend CG in Eastern Oregon in August a couple of years ago.. Not good, It was 104F at 10 pm,(camper has no AC) stayed in a cheap motel in SLC the next nite.. LOL, DAve

We used to be able to enjoy the "luxury hotel" experience. Then we got into show dogs. Now it's Red Roof Inns (they take dogs in the room). A clean place to sleep close to the venue and close to decent, affordable restaurants is all we ask.

A few years ago, however, we stayed at the Westin in downtown Chicago while attending the International Shows at the McCormick Center. They were taking dogs so we stayed on the 27th floor with Annie, Rowdy and Coco. The look on people's faces when I boarded the elevator to take one of the Rotties out for a potty break was worth the price of the room.

After one such walk town to the park and back, Rowdy and I met a group of college cheerleaders who were staying there.
So there in the lobby of the Westin, I had Rowdy laying on the floor on his back getting his belly rubbed by 10 gorgeous college girls. Talk about a chick-magnet ! The next day, he won his second Major.

When I go to shows to shoot, it's the same deal as going to show -- I work all day and process most of the night so all I need is a clean room with a good bed and decent shower. I don't believe we've spent more than $80/night on a hotel room in over 10 years.

I'm not snobbish but I travel a lot for work and I 'need' a good place just to make up for being away from home.
Of course when I travel private (i.e. I have to pay myself) then I go 'cheapskate' rates. ;-)
