Went to the pet store today and stocked up on treats for pets, got a number of treats but wondering-what do other use that they have found to be good. Interested in treats for all types of animals.

I don't use treats as some owners are picky and even worse, it is messy.

Squeaky toys, animal distress calls and your voice(I can get a really awful shrill voice going) all work to get that twist of the head you are looking for in pets

Where do you get "animal distress calls", I have read about these but did not see any at the pet store

John,
As Julie says, be careful about what you give to pets for treats because some have allergies and owners tend to be a bit hyper about them. I suggest they bring their favorite treat when they come.

I have a bunch of squeaky toys that can be tossed plus I use tennis balls that can be rolled for dogs. The only problem is that the dogs tend to chase them .

I also have a few that emit strange sounds when you press their paws so I have a wobbling chicken, a burping Aardvark and a hedgehog that makes very rude noises.

I've developed my key mouth noises for all types of pets which include a ping pong ball, horses trotting, and various other noises not usually permitted in polite company .

My "standard" baiting food is milkbones. Right out of the box. Most dogs recognize them and look at them when you hold them up and you can break them in two for quick treats. And most owners are fine with them. The head shot I posted of Blue was gotten when I held a milkbone in my left hand and just moved it from my far left to my far right. He closed his mouth, and just followed the treat with his head and eyes.

That's another thing -- open mouths. Most dogs will start panting when they've been working for a while under the lights so you might want to get a spay bottle with some water and a little bit of lemon juice to squirt in their mouth when they won't put that tongue back in.

Don't forget the grooming stuff as well -- brushes & combs to get that coat nice and shiny before you shoot. For both dogs and cats. I've also found that if you get a small spray bottle of human leave-in conditioner (I use Herbal Essences), you can spray that on the coat and brush it out and you not only get a nice shine, you get a lovely scent. You're on your own with birds.

I've found that if somebody else can get the pet's attention, I can just toss a toy where I want to get them to look. That is the best combination for me.

Have fun. It's all about learning and keeping the shooting environment as relaxed as possible.

Jim

I ordered a distress call from Cabela's, this is the one I choose
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templa...l&noImage=0

Called a Primos® Catnip™ Predator Call

I also have a basket of toys with squeakers, some milk bone and rawhide bones

Getting a black background on Monday via UPS, what other color backgrounds would others recommend?

John,
I like this one because it works will all colors of animals (good for people, too).

Black is my favorite because you can do this with it.

White, of course, for high-key effects.

Basic blue works well either as a solid color or mottled -- we mix in some washable white spray paint at Xmas time to give it a bit of a snow effect.

Afterwards, we just wash it out and we're back to a nice stone-washed blue backdrop. We've done the same with a rich red which we dyed ourselves using white muslin. There are a slew of other mottled color variations but I think keeping it simple works best. I'd add in a charcoal/gray backdrop which works well for dogs with great color -- Irish Setters for example.

Start with some basics and you can always add stuff later after you've seen some examples of them in somebody's gallery.

I also love black. I plan to get an ole master brown and I will add a gray to the wish list. More as the weeks go by.

I have been talking to the local boxer rescue organization to donate photo services; hoping to hear from some of the other rescue organizations; have emailed many. Anyone know a rescue person, please have them contact me for free photos of rescued pets.

John,
you might want to consider some "specialty" backdrops as well like the one I use for 4th of July shows/patriotic portraits.

We also do special things at Holiday Time with props & stuff.

The possibilities are endless but having a core of backdrops you can use in 90% of the situations is what you're shooting for.
