Greetings all: Just signed up and really enjoy the site. I too am a Nikon shooter and just read this evening the Alaska article that Bernie Weinzimmer wrote. It was great article. I own many pieces of Nikon glass and noted in the article that of the Alaskan shooter brought 200-400 VR zoom. I have been trying to decided on this lens or a 500mm lens. I use a D2x and D70. Seems most of the trips attendees were Nikon and have similiar equipment to my listing.
I do shoot some sports with my kids (soccer and wrestling) so the zoom is very attractive. I don't do birds unless I get an opportunity to capture larger ones such as the offerings in Florida or the birds that have wider wing spread. (Frankly, the little ones we have in the Midwest just don't do anything for me.) I do some nature (larger critter) but right now its captive. Most mammal opportunities would be a special trip to their habitat.
I would certainly appreciate anyone feedback or experience on their longer lenses used and their application.
Regards,
Greg

I believe it's a tough call and really depends on your shooting style and subject. That said, if your willing to lug the heft of the 200-400 vr it's a great lens.
If your interested in shooting some sports and some wildlife you may be able to get buy with a 80-400 vr. It has limitations, but it's light weight, and affordable.
The 500 is a awesome lens too. Keep in mind that you will need a sturdy tripod/head, and the means to lug the gear arround.
If you have the cash buy both the 500 and the 200-400!
It's really a tough call. I'd say if it were me I'd go with the 200-400 mostly for the vr, and afs as both lenses area relatively close in size and weight.
I dont think you would be dissapointed with the 200-400, it really is a great lens!
Thanks for the reply. I had a 80-400vr. Had same issues many have found: soft at the upper end and slow AF. Sold it when I went full digital, exception of Xpan (love those panoramics). Thanks again.
Greg
