OK Everyone,

I learned something valuable while running the new CO 4.5. LOL, I need a new desktop. I knew this day would come, but it seems like it finally has. The question is - excluding Mac (which I cannot afford to upgrade all my software, etc), what would you buy?

Part II:
Who is making the best LCD monitors these days? I figure it is time to finally upgrade my CRT (which has been great...just a bit small).

James

Eizo and NEC are making THE best monitors, but they are really pricey.

Apple (which will run on a PC just fine) Cinema displays are the more affordable "best."

It would probably be less expensive than you think to consider Mac. You can swap a Mac serial number for your Photoshop PC version from Adobe basically for the asking plus shipping.

Just about everything else will either run with Windows on a Mac or exists in a Mac native version.

Here is a system I support at work a lot and I have played with them and they are pretty rock solid.

Price about 2,399.00 WITH good 24" monitor.

Dell T3400
QuadCore 2.4GHz Processer
4Gigs Of Ram (2 sticks of ram...not four so you can add more without tossing the origonal if you want to go to 8gigs.)
Vista Ultimate for the OS
Nvidia Quadro FX1700 Dual DVI video card with 512MB ram
80GB Hard Drive
Dell 24" Ultrasharp 2408WFP Monitor

You will be ready for the new CS4 when it comes out which will be designed to leverage 64bit operating system....and more than 4GB of ram.....you will thank me for that one later when it is out....lol.

I custom build my own machines, and will soon upgrade my MB, memory and processor...with a better graphic card in the wings here in 2009.

And Dell has a really decent warranty department. I am Dell certified and really enjoy working with them.

If your accident prone....get the accidental dammage warranty...even it its your fault...no problems....instant repair or replacment ...no questions asked.

Hey Guys,

That is a great start. Thanks. I currently have 2 GB of RAM in my computer, and was looking to jump up to 6 or 8 as that seems to be the direction everything is going in.

LOL, there are always more questions....

(1) I understand that the new quad core AMD chips are allegedly better than the Intel chips (apparently they distribute the workload better than the Intel chips). Is this true? Dell seems to be committed to Intel chips. Roman, when you say 'good' monitor, what does that mean?

(2) I found this computer through Gateway. Thoughts?

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?...f=16&loc=02

(3) As for LCD monitors...
My wife has a samsung that we purchased a couple of years ago. It was allegedly one of the better monitors on the market at the time. However, I have NEVER gotten the highlights right with it. It just blows everything out, no matter how many times I try to calibrate it.

I know that LCD monitors have gotten better, but are they really ready to replace CRTs?

Thanks all!
James

CS4 is already "out" and running super on my system.

I'd say that LCD's are more than ready to replace the CRTs.

About that gateway...ACER just bought them out. In my book ACER is a four letter word...(if you catch my drift) They have about the cheapest parts you can get....usually break down and cause more headachs than they are worth. Before the buyout.....I would have given Gateway a stronger endorsment. It is why our IT department dropped them and went back to Dell. Also if you look at the PC your dealing with a built in video chip on the mainboard and shared memory. Absolute mayhem. If you can afford the Dell T3400, it starts about 900.00. I just speced yours out with the 400.00 worth of memory and the $450.00 monitor....and a few other goodies. Just go to the site and pick out your own specs that meet your budget.

I have a dell and an older Gateway monitor (before they were bought out by Acer) and I am highly impressed. The Dell Monitor I speced is one of Dells best and gets very high review marks....and only bested by the high end dedicated uber expensive monitors.

I just put a Dell 24" monitor at my desk at work today, will calibrate it tomorrow, but it is quite nice.

I can second Roman's recommendation for Dell machines and monitors. I've been using a dual core 3.0 GHz Dell machine with 2 Gigs of ram and a Dell 24" monitor for the last year and a half and have absolutely no complaints (even running NX2 which is a real hog). I held on to my old IBM 21" monitor for years because I wasn't sure about the LCD monitors. When it gave up the ghost I sprang for the 24" Dell and quickly realized my concerns were groundless. I could never give up the widescreen and the only way I'm going to give this monitor up is when I go to 30" (when they come down in price).

I'm still running XP on my machine so 2 gigs of ram is still pretty comfortable. If you're going to run Vista then 4 gigs are probably a must. If you're going to run 64 bit then the sky is the limit I guess. I would imagine CS4 must really fly on an 8 gig, 64 bit system.

Hey Roman and All,

Do you know what are the differences between the Dell 2408 and 2409 monitors? Is the 2409 just the newer model?

Thanks
James

Hi James:

Comparing the two monitors on Dell's website, besides costing $270.- more than the 2709; the differences I see are that the 2408 swivels, appears to have several inputs not available on the 2409, and appears to have a much greater contrast ratio.

Desktop computer prices are already quite attractive, and should drop a bit more leading up to the holiday shopping season.

Hey Jim,

Thanks. LOL, I should have been able to do that myself. :P Having said that, I was having trouble finding the 2408 at Best Buy, but I did find the 2409. I did notice the price was cheaper, but I was not sure if that was a situation of the price dropping over several months.

So, it looks like the two best LCD monitors in the price range are the Dell 2408 and the HP 2475w. I wish I could break $600.00, but that looks to be the entry price right now. Is it potentially worth dropping down to a 22 inch LCD? There is a huge price difference between the 22 and 24 inch monitors.

James
