When I was young, my family could not afford much in the way of entertainment. One relatively cheap activity available to us back then was to pack some sandwiches, hang the canvas water bag on the front bumper, and go for a ride in the car.
In recent years, the price of gas made going for a ride in the car a pretty pricey endeavor. Well, with gas sitting at $1.56 a gallon right now, my wife Petra and I decided to go for a ride in the car on Friday.
We decided to revisit one of our favorite, albeit sometimes harrowing drives, the Apache Trail, a 47 mile stretch of road between Roosevelt Lake and Apache Junction, AZ. Much of the road is unpaved and follows along the walls of the Salt River Canyon. Sometimes the road is relatively flat down low by the river, and at other times it climbs up the precipitously steep canyon walls, frequently narrowing to one lane.
