James,
the DPR folks who looked at the image at 500% thought it looked a bit soft !

I just don't think it is a great portrait. The composition is pretty blah and I hope this is not the one they hang in the smithsonian!!

My critique has nothing to do with the camera, but, the whole picture itself.

Yeah...I was kind of taken aback. I guess its not what you know...but WHO you know.

Maybe I should shoot him an e-mail and become the official landscape photographer for the US. :~)

OK, I apparently missed something. Does anyone have a link to this portrait? Thanks

Edit: sorry, a quick google and I found it.

I would like to know what he uses for lights? I see he used a large octabox camera left for his key, looks like a softbox camera right for fill.

The image is tack sharp but not sure about the composition and crop and also key looks a little harsh and would benefit from a levels adjustment.

OK, guys, we're getting a bit picky here. This is the FIRST Digital Official portrait of a President. Uh, does that mean that W was only an analog image of a President?

It isn't the official archive image. But it is the first time an official portrait was taken digitally. It may not be perfect, but it is timely. In oh so many ways!

I certainly was not commenting on the camera. I for one will be purchasing the 5d mk11 the minute I can justify it. It clearly is an awesome camera.

Lighting is just a place where my head is most of the time and the effects of different lighting. I wouldn't think the "white house photographer" would be the individual shooting an image for the National Archives or even a portrait to be hung in the White House, although I could be wrong. I would suspect a very high end known pro would be called on to do that. I also don't think I am any where close to being good enough to be an official photographer for the Harvey Putzo house much less the White House. :-)
