Hey Guys,

I just wanted to put on the table that we seem like we are being targeted for SPAM recently. Every day, I am deleting threads on a variety of illicit subjects. LOL, I am not sure how many IP addresses I can possibly ban, but I don't think it is near enough. If anyone here ever sees something that gets lost in the mix, please send me a PM or e-mail me.

Thanks
James

Is that what happened to the SAVE=A-LIFE thread?

Does the Notify Moderator button work for letting yall know we've been spammed?

LOL, it SHOULD work. The problem is that if I am off and about (which is most days), I don't have access to my e-mail til the evening. It is best to send me a PM as I typically log into the site during the day at least once.

As to the missing thread...we don't know what happened. Chanthee has been trying to save it. I believe that she has everything up to March 20th and is hitting a bit of a wall. We don't want to roll back the system for one thread...that would be a problem. So, she is trying to do what she can manually.

AH, I've been punching the notify button a lot lately. I guess I'll use PM now.

Sounds like time to upgrade the security.

Yeah. LOL, we are working on it. I have been pushing Chanthee to help me with the migration to V-Bulletin. Everything one step at a time because she is working lots of hours right now.

Thanks to everyone who are sending me the PMs, and to our forum moderators who are deleting them as quick as possible.

What exactly are the spammers after? No one clicks on their links and the posts are so jumbled that there is no message. I have the same question about the 50 messages a day I get regarding winning the Nigerian Lottery or buying Viagra? What is really going on in the Internetland? How does someone profit from any of it now that no one is foolish enough to click through or reply?

I think that the problem is that SOME people actually do click on the links. There really are people who fall for the Nigerian prince in distress, etc. It seems completely insane that anyone would ever be so gullible, but it happens. People purchase 'on-line herbal viagra' and other such things.

My guess is that most of this is automated. They have UBB Threads down to a science and are not actually putting any physical work into it...outside of confirming a bunch of e-mails.

I just wonder sometimes if it might be a little more sinister than what it appears to be on the surface.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/04/21/pentagon.hacked/

I assume that you would have to throw a big net out there to catch a few rare fish.

Hard to believe that anyone actually would buy Viagra like this. Let's see, its risky to click on a link, its risky to visit their web site, its really risky and stupid to make a purchase from a spammer with a CC#. And it would seem really risky and stupid and possibly deadly to ingest anything purchased that way.

I gon't get it.
