And ex hunter/jumper princess turned reiner. This is her boyfriend's Quarter horse stallion. Stallion's have so much more "presence" than a gelding or mare. Fun to photo for sure

Hey Julie,

I think these are two of the best pieces you have posted yet with horses involved. Really nicely done. The second photo is an absolute winner, IMO.

Excellent. I like 2, but I think 3 is my favorite. He looks like he has a lot of personality. He was definitlly keeping an eye on you!

What is that mark on his neck?

Thanks, Jeff

Julie,
you give good stallion. Nice photos and your knowledge of angles and poses for horses is obvious.

Pretty boy!

Fantastic photos! #2 is my pick as well. I love the clarity that you got on the photos. What camera/lens did you use and what were the specific settings for that photo? Still trying to get a better grasp on the proper settings to use in various situations/lighting. Thanks!

I am using and Olympus E-1 and Zuiko 50-200. With the horses and dogs, I like to use the long lenses to keep the distortion down(that big headed dog thing) I will have to look up the exif, but, I had it on ISO 400, aperature priority, wide open(so, anywhere from 2.8-3.5) I tried to keep the shutter speed over 1/200th, and I think with the last one, where the sun came out, it got ot 1/400th.

It was good and bad that it was overcast. Easy enough to blow out the white areas on the horse, but, with the black hat and top, that always makes it more fun.

This was my first western style shoot. I know the hunters and the dressage stuff. QH people want a bit different look, want to emphasize the junk in the trunk of the horse.

He is a very nice QH stallion. All foundation bloodlines so he doesn't have those tiny chariacture feet that make a horse lame by age 3. This is the kind of horse I would look for if I was breeding working quarter horses. He has bone AND feet.

Wow - love these, Julie - maybe my favs from your stuff so far! Make no mistake, either - the lighting was great, and you capitalized. There's a lot to be said for overcast lighting - the big soft box in the sky!
