This is the Walnutport Locktenders house for Lock #23 on the Lehigh Canal. The canal was completed in 1829 connecting Mauch Chunk (Jim Thorpe) with Easton 46 miles down stream along the Lehigh River. This canal predated rail service by 35 years(1864) and was the primary means of coal transport. Lock # 23 is about half way down the canal in Walnutport, PA. The Locktenders house was restored in 1989 and the Lock in 1998.
