Here's a few shot of a jeuvenile Black Crowned Night Heron that allowed me to get close.

These were taken in the Ottawa area.

Nice bird and good work in harsh light. There is some motion blur in the second shot. I was wondering why you were shooting at 1/40 sec. ?

Well, Durwood, I started out hand held, with my car only a short distance away. After 30 minutes and many shots at high shutter speeds, I got the tripod out of the trunk and changed settings to stopped down apertures and ISO 100. I tripped the shutter with an RC-1. The bird was like a cement statue most of the time, and I didn't react when he moved around and unfurled his wings. With no action shots at the higher shutter speeds I decided to post this one for its novelty.

I love the second shot, all those layers of feathers in incredible contours.

Hey Jim,

These are very nice - thanks for sharing. In this case, I don't mind the mild motion blur. It gives the bird a sense of movement...LOL, which I guess it was having. :P
