Hi All!

Went to a local hunt test this weekend to photograph it. Never been to a hunt test before and it was interesting from the dog person in me and challenging for the photographer in me! I got some decent shots but I wish they had the clarity and focus that Julie and others have posted on this site! I keep telling myself that practice will improve my skills but I am impatient by nature Anyways here are a few of the shots I took:

Thanks for looking!

I think these are great, you should be happy with them! What lens were you using, looks like maybe a canon 100-400? I went to a hunt test to take photos and by the time I lugged my tripod, camera and 6.6 lb lens over 500 miles of bumpy terrain following everyone else on HORSEBACK...when I caught up with the group all the action was long over and no dogs left in sight and I was ready to collapse.

Thanks Dee Dee!

I was using a Nikkor 70-300 for these photos. I did not use a tripod and luckily the hunt was situated on only about 10-20 acres so it was not as bad a walk as your hunt test sounded! I was offered a horse to shoot from but while I used to show horses, I figured that I could get a steadier shot on the ground. Not to mention I did not want the possibility of getting dumped with my camera around my neck

Hey Ingrid,

I also like your compositions a lot. The last one in particular, I find quite nice (the dog in the field). Please do not take this the wrong way. I think that you could use some work on your post processing though. Some simple PS tools, such as shadow/highlights and levels could turn these shots into real winners. I tweaked these in less than five minutes.

If you think they look improved, I will be glad to show you how it is done.

James

LOL, I need a lot of help in a lot of areas so no offense here I have to confess that I messed around with them in PS but do not have a good grasp on utilizing that tool so I would love to hear how you did what you did!

Thanks so much!

Those do look good James, it is really nice we have things like photoshop at our disposal!

LOL Ingrid, I used to show horses too...but I also wouldn't want to ride around on one with all that expensive gear. I can just see the horse spooking and gear flying. I'm glad you had good conditions, you really got some great shots.

Lovely shots Ingrid. You were right to say thank you but no to riding/shooting, it just does not work. For the time I worked in Nairobi the riding was terrific, on the edges of the game reserves and great for seeing the animals. But even a quite small film SLR in one hand and the reins in the other never made for clear sharp results.
