Awesome Julie. I think if you got it this good by the third try, only good things are to come. That is one cute puppy or two. The second shot in you second set is great, the little bald dog.
Thanks,
Jeff

Obviously, I need more work on light placement
Not much more work though, they do look good, and it can't be "easy" - I was at a short tutorial on lighting this week, they said 'high key' should show no visible shadows at all, and okay to be very slightly over-exposed. And suggested top end fashion magazines to see good recent examples. I've looked at the web and can't see any precise information (except general forum-type opinion) - there are some portrait photography books advertised with high-key chapters so will look at those when I can.
The puppy is lovely, have to admit though I cried when I first saw what they've done to his ears, I really had to get past that to look at the lighting.

...but does crop the show puppies ears.
Wasn't having a go at your friends - ear cropping was banned in Australia about 20-30 years ago so we just don't see it, even in the show ring. Last year tail-docking was also banned in most States. The breeders are screaming blue murder that it will be the end of civilisation to have to exhibit a long-tailed dobe or rottie. They'll just have to get their heads around it. The debate has been savage, it got very political. Already the young long-tails are appearing in the Ring, it's actually a good look once you get used to it. Photographically, it makes square format difficult: I liked square format rottie shots.

Here is a guy who has put together a load of short tutorials on classic portrait photography. He is shooting people, but the setups are similar. Flash setups
Thanks,
Jeff

Julie, my favorite is when they use dixie cups to hold up the taped ears! Great TV reception I hear : ) These are very nice. Using a high key background makes things more difficult than they need to be but that's an artistic choice. I always use mottled backgrounds because the shadows disappear -- especially in high-volume work where I don't have the time to be cloning out shadows on every frame. Are the umbrellas white or silver? I find that silver reflectors really snap up black dogs (and as an owner of Rotties, I really understand black dogs). I use the white umbrellas for people because they create softer highlights and shadows. Keep practicing! Nice Dobe puppy, by the way. Jim
