Hi Dean,

Thanks for posting. I think the question that I want to ask is 'what are you trying to say' with the photographs? They are all perfectly exposed (though I think the light is hard on the first image).

The shots that I like most are the ones that have interaction. i.e. the spider climbing the flower and the last image. I think that I might use a clone tool or paint brush with a low opacity to lightly take out the flash marks on some of the images.

James

James, you're way ahead of me...just ventured out of the auto mode a couple of weeks ago. Right now just practicing on focus, light, sharpness, color and saturation. The very basics. Hopefully the creativity will come later.

Thank you for your comments/advice, Dean

LOL, sorry. I would say that you are doing spectacularly then! As I was saying before, my favorite ones are where you are showing interaction of some sort. As I was saying, it looks like the exposures are very good.

May I ask the photographs you like most and why?

James

James,
I presume you're talking about these photographs. I like them all just because they are all the best macro shots I have ever taken.(all, this week - the good ones and the bad ones)
I was thrilled that they were basically focused and sharp, something I haven't accomplished shooting macro until these. Seems to me, that other than purchasing the equipment, this would be the required, first stepping stone down the long path into photography with many more stones yet to be laid. But I will start putting more emphasis and thought on artistic impression through composition soon.
Hey, in your previous reply, you were referring to the light being harsh in the photo of the first flower? Looked pretty good to me. If so, give me your thoughts please. Just wandering if you meant the second, yellow flower.
Thanks for your comments and advice, Dean

The cactus is cool. I see what James is talking about.
The latest shrimp flower shot is very good, but the lighting is direct and hot.
The Spider is Awesome! I like that a lot. Great composition and exposure. The color is great as is the sharpness. Clipping off the tips of his hind feet is a little distracting, but only slightly. And of course with the same lighting, the flash is a little harsh.
The lizard is great, composition is your main issue there. Look at how sharp that eye is:)
And that spider is very cool!. Composition, exposure and sharpness all great. But again the flash is hot.

For flash work like this here is what I use, a Lumiquest bounce card. It looks though like you are using maybe the onboard flash, and that will give you the direct hash lighting. If you get an external flash and remove it from the camera and bounce the light, you will be very impressed. You are making some great progress.

Thanks, Jeff

About the harsh lighting, please explain, it looks pretty good to my untrained and unqualified eye. If anything, the flower is on the dark side to me.

Yeah, he had started moving around at this point and I was chasing him with the lens and his feet were not in the frame. Had to stop at this point, the batteries for the flash gave out.

I guess you mean "how sharp" in a positive way?

And that spider is very cool!. Composition, exposure and sharpness all great. But again the flash is hot.

I like this one also, wish you could see his eyes better though. On the other forum one said I should crop out the right side of the image but I kind of thought of it as space for him to crawl to.

No, it's an external flash shot directly. I will get one of these bounce cards to help soften the flash.

Here is an article on the rule of thirds. It is the main rule of composition. http://www.silverlight.co.uk/tutorials/compose_expose/thirds.html

I cropped your lizard photo, and did a quick levels adjustment. This is how I would have either framed or cropped it

Very nice Julie, I'm glad somebody knows what I'm doing. I have printed to document on the "rules" and will read. Thank you for viewing and your comments. Dean
