Tony a while back you recommended two pair of hiking boots. I think they were both available through Cabalas. Well as fate would have it, I am now in the market and the original posting has gone. Can you please post that info again.

Also if anyone else can recommend a good med to heavy duty hiking boot that would be great. I am happy with the pair I have, but it’s always nice to see what else is out there.

With all my gear, I am pushing 280 lbs on my boots, I fully recognize the benefit of a strong and sturdy shoe:) I really need to get better at leaving some stuff home:)

I own and use the following boots. I'd recomend the Lowa, or the Meindl Alaskan, or th Lowa sheep hunter for real heavy loads over difficult country.

The Perfekt hunts is a great mid to rough terrain boot, but if your doing a lot of walking/hiking, they are awesome.

1. Meindl Pefekt hunter, (they make a shorter one called the "hiker" but it's the same boot with a shorter upper) is the best all around boot I've ever owned. I use them for most light, to med heavy terrain, up to mountaineer, scree, and talus. . $220 - Cabelas

2. Meindl Canada, when I need a stronger shank, for mountain climing/mountaineering etc. $240 Cabelas

3. Lowa - Sheep Hunter, again for VERY rugged, high mountain climing and heavey loads, they have a 3/4 steel shank. $300 - From Lowa. . . On line. . .

I am going to take that to Cabelas and try them on one day. My current pair has a sole problem, they may last a few dozen more trips, they may not, but at least I know what to look at first now.

Dont wait! If you have the money, and need a good solid boot, go buy the Perfekt hunter NOW, if you can get them. They usually run low this time of year. In the past, I've had to call seperate stores to find what I need.

Why wait, the perfekt hunter does not need any break in time. Get a bottle of Nickwax, put it on as soon as you get them home, it will reduce the sqeak. After a few outings they will be as quite as a mouse.

Why wait to get them? I would not risk it and your back and feet deserves the best you can offer it! I'll bet you that if you wait, you will ask yourself, "why did I wait"

I hear ya there, a good pair of boots goes a long way. The pair I use now are very sturdy, strong and comfortable. In fact they are fairly new. The problem is the soles are bonded to the upper, and they are loosing they stick. I rebonded the few small areas where the sole had lifted, so I will be good for a while. It doesn't affect the fit or support unless I loose it all together:) But I will get to Cabelas soon.

Just an update,
I went to Cabellas this past weekend. I tried on the Cabela's "Perfekt™" Hunter and they were great. As you said straight out of the box they felt ready to go. But, straight out of the box they were softer and had less support then the pair I currently use. So I looked for the Canada, your next up recommendation. Unfortunately the store had none, even the kid had “never heard of them”. But prom reviewing their website, I was also interested in the Cabela's Alaska Hiker which they had. I tried them on and well while they were less comfortable then the Perfekt, but they certainly had the support I was looking for. And they weighed the same. The one thing I did notice is they both had less arch support then I needed. I looked around for an insert for increasing the arch and the Sales kid recommended these inserts
I put them in and put on the new thicker socks I was buying and man that was it, I was sold. These boots are great. I think I can continue to hop from pointy rock to pointy rock all day without a problem. And it is rocky here in PA, AT hikers complain of all the trail, Maine to Georga, this is some of the worst rocky hiking there is! I like it that way, but a good boot is required. Thanks for the recommendations, I am very happy with them, and look forward to testing them out soon. I think they may need a little break in time as apposed to the perfekt hiker.
