Any tips on shooting lightning? I tried my hand at it last night.
It seemed like I had the exposure right, but perhaps the shutter was open too long. The clouds were moving too fast which blurred the picture. I first started with the shutter at 30 sec, 5.6 aperture, and 1600 iso. I played from there. lower iso, faster shutter. Couldn't find the right combo before the storm reached me.
I'll post the best picture over lunch for you to see.

Any tips are appreciated. Also, I would like to see any storm pictures you all have taken.

Thanks
Andrew

It ALL depends on the storm conditions. There's no real rule of thumb because unless you’re shooting late night lightning, there's too much ambient light. Ambient will determine your exposure, not the lighting. If it's completely dark, you've got more options, but you also must deal with noise, or over exposure and film fatigue, or reciprocity failure.

If you’re trying to play the "keep the shutter open, and then close it after the lightning strikes," it must be dark out.

Also, depending on the storm, lighting can and often is bright enough to illuminate an entire landscape making it look like day even when it's night!

Post your shot and add environmental data and describe the storm conditions. . .

Here are a few of the better shots. No real cloud-to-ground bolts. More just flashes in the clouds.

The second shot shows the city a few miles away. That's the only ambient light around. It was pitch black out in the pasture.

I guess it's the ones where I zoomed in that were the real blurry ones.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.
Andrew
