Obviously this has not had PP but want to know if what is in the frame is an eye-pleasing angle. Does the fence stop your eye or does it lead you into the shot? I know the starkness of the white fence is a distraction but does each element of this photo work with the others? Geeshzzz, am I making any sense?

I'm going to cut to the chase. each person should print and hang images that have meaning to them, it is a 100% personal choice and each to their own is a good rule of thumb. . .

Now, on to the image and MY thoughts. It is not an eye pleasing angle for one main reason, it is not level. I'm a stickler for level and can spot .10 degrees in an image and so when I see it, it bothers me. . .

More on the shot, the light was too hard when you shot the scene therefore the fence is blown out and the trees/forest are underexposed. In order to get the sky and the trees to expose properly you would have had to have better light, or blow out more of the fence. . .

I think you should go back, when the light is right, and reshoot the scene and then ask yourself if it's the correct angle. . .

I think the fence is too distracting, try stepping back and using a more normal to short tele lens and preserve the real life scale. If I were a fence manufacturer and that was my brand of fence, I might like the shot especially if there was a horse standing behind it. I think you would be better off with a longer lens and stepping back away from the fence.

If I knew what format the photos was i would have done some work on it for you. . .

Hope this helps, keep posting and keep shooting. . .

Tony

Debbie,

With the same caveat that Tony mentioned that ultimately it is what you like that really counts, I have to say that this composition does not work for me at all. My biggest quenstion is what is the picture about? Is it the fence or is it a fall color landscape. The angle of the fence does create a dramatic leading line but unfortunately it leads the eye right out of the image rather than bringing it in. Tony is probably right, there are great elements here and it is probably worth going back and looking for a better composition.

the first thing I see is a huge white fence, then it takes me right to the left side and out of the picture. Unless I go back, the pretty trees in the bg get lost. My 2¢ worth. DAve

Thank you all. Sadly, I agree. The yard isnt mine, so little I can do about the horse but the rest I sure can work on. The time of day was not planned but the next trip will be. As you can see, shooting in bright light is just one of the many issues on my list of.....'I shall conquer.'

I shoot in any light because if I dont see the 'mess', I will never know how to clean it up. I like the elements in the shot, not the burnt field so much but they are just good elements in a horrible shot.

The eye is led out of the photo by the fence, hang a left and out'ta there. Again, another shot, warts n' all but if I had quit with the butterfly's warts......my fence would never have had any. Stayed tuned to the next exciting segment of ....'Warts N' All!'

First ask, what is your goal for this photograph.....what is your intended subject?

Right now, as shot, the fence is your dominant subject. Was that what you wanted? If so than your shot succeded....sort of....as the fence is too bright to give it the right detail of an intended subject.

My guess is you were looking to create a balanced scene of the fence and the fall colors of the background mountains.

Like tony said....going back in late evening or super early morning will give balanced light...

The composition as well is a bit unbalanced....stark white competing against the colorful background.....in this battle for the viewers attention...stark white wins....making it the main element of the composition....and the fence only goes to the middle line of this horizontal frame...then zooms off the frame from there never letting the eye roam over to the colors of the hillside.

Now...reshooting this....I would either remove the fence in its entirety, or back up and go to the left....reducing the size of the fence in the entire picture....and let it cover some of that bald ground you see above it on the right hand side.

This shot definitly needs to be revisited if your goal is to hone your photographic skills. I do belive there is a shot there, just that you havent maximized the scene.

Thank you. I take a lot of 'nothing' shots for artistic reference later, especially when drawing out of season. By that I mean, in winter when I spend more time drawing, I refer to the spring, summer and fall photos for inspiration. When the photo is used as inspirational reference, a 'nothing' shot is perfect to be blended with another or several other photos later in a drawing, and I am not clouded by too many elements in the shot.

I am trying to kill two birds with one stone, capturing what I need for artisic reference later and to increase my photographic skills. Sorry, I should have given the shot a little more explanation. Although I set up the shot this way, I would never had drawn it this way. I think maybe I should start paying more attention, shooting as I would draw, not just shooting to fill a gallery of reference shots.

Thank you all for making me think this through.
